Burglaries tend to peak throughout October, December and January and as the clocks go back on Sunday (28 October) you are being encouraged to review your home security.
“The message around this campaign is really simple and clear… Lock up Light up.
“This time of year we routinely see an annual spark in burglary. Alongside ongoing operations delivered by the force, we are advising everybody to think about the security of their home and follow our crime prevention advice.
“Leaving a house in darkness acts as an open invite to thieves so make sure your home is locked up and lit up as the evenings get darker.”
Our advice to residents is:
▪️Be pro-active by having good window locks and strong deadlocks on doors and locks on garden sheds
▪️Always lock doors behind you and remove the key from the lock. Hide keys away from doors along with other valuables including handbags, car keys and cash
▪️Consider investing in light timers which are inexpensive, widely accessible and give the impression someone is home. You can buy light timers at most DIY stores and ensure they are set for the hours you will be out during the evening
▪️If you’re going on holiday or away for a long period of time, avoid posting about being away on social media and tell a trusted neighbour how long you will be away for
▪️And, always ask yourself: Is it locked up? Is it lit up? Is it secure?
The Darker Nights campaign also focuses on business theft too with most store break-ins occurring at night as the darker evenings provide burglars with more opportunity to break into businesses.
The same safety messages are being applied to business owners as shops and warehouses also need to be locked up and lit up this winter. Outside lighting can act as a deterrent and it is a good idea to floodlight all entrances to building and alleyways.
